What does an IP address tell you?

An IP address is not a name and not a directory entry. It is a routable number, and this is what is publicly on record about it.

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address?

Your public IP address is at the top of this page. That is the address your provider currently makes you visible at on the internet — not the address your router hands your laptop or phone internally.

Does my IP address change?

Usually, yes. Most Dutch providers issue a dynamic address, which can change after a modem restart or a maintenance window. A fixed address is a separate option at many providers, often only on business lines.

Can someone find me from my IP address?

Not personally. An IP address reveals which provider operates the range and in which country or region that range is registered. Only the provider knows who was using the address at a given moment, and they release that solely to law enforcement on a valid order.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses 32 bits and offers about 4.3 billion addresses — which have run out. IPv6 uses 128 bits and offers so many that scarcity no longer applies. Many Dutch lines have both; which one your connection is using is shown above.

What is a private IP address?

Addresses like 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.5 and 172.16.0.1 are reserved for use inside a network. They are not routed on the internet, so they never appear as your public address. Your router translates between them using NAT.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number identifies a network that announces its own routes on the internet. KPN, Ziggo and SURF each have one or more. The ASN shown with your address tells you which network announces your traffic.

Do you store my IP address?

No. We read your address from the connection itself and do not send it to a third-party service in order to display it. What we do and do not keep is set out on the privacy page.

Does a VPN hide my IP address?

A VPN replaces the address websites see with that of the VPN server. Your own provider still sees that you connect to that server, and the VPN operator sees your real address. It moves the trust, it does not remove it.
